Augsburg Adult Bible Study

Augsburg Adult Bible Study is a year-round Bible study that is released quarterly and is based on a six-year cycle as found in the International Uniform Lesson Series (National Council of Churches). This cycle of readings includes selections from every book of the Bible. Written by an array of accomplished theologians, the Augsburg Adult Bible Study provides terrific insights into scripture through questions, prayer, suggested memorization, and daily readings.

Augsburg Adult Bible Studies began in the mid-1960s as a cooperative project between Augsburg Publishing House of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) and the board of Publications of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). The selection of writers and the editing of manuscripts rotated between these two offices until the merger of the two churches in 1988. Today, the Augsburg Adult Bible Study is edited and produced by Augsburg Fortress.

The primary audience for this study is adult groups in congregations in the United States and Canada. Many, but not all, study groups are Lutheran, so the theology and biblical exegesis reflect current Lutheran teaching but do not assume an exclusively Lutheran audience. The series is intended to be an intermediate-level Bible study, meaning that we recognize that these adult learners have some understanding of scripture and appreciate delving into key points of text interpretation.

Each session:

  • Explores the meaning of the text for the original writer and audience, and for today
  • Includes a list of related texts for daily Bible reading
  • Provides extensive background on each text and recommendations for leading the sessions

Quarter Two, covering March through May of 2021, is titled “Prophets Faithful to God’s Covenant” and is written by Walter C. Bouzard. It covers passages from the prophets of the Old Testament. Quarter Three, which covers June through August of 2021, is titled “Confident Hope” and is written by Pamela Shellberg. It mostly explores passages from the New Testament.
