Augsburg Fortress is now offering the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVue) in both Pew and Gift Editions. The NRSVue reflects discoveries of ancient texts and new insights made in the 30 years since the NRSV was last revised. This newly-updated translation offers clearer, more direct, and inclusive language, and increased cultural sensitivity absent of the unintended biases of prior versions.

Will the NRSV be going away? When? Why?

How does the NRVSue compare to the NRSV? Will I notice the changes?
The Friendship Press website offers background information on the development and features of the NRSVue. In some passages, you will notice no change between the NRSV and NRSVue. In others, the changes are minimal, perhaps a single word in a passage or a change in punctuation or capitalization. Yet still others have changes that are recognizable, especially when the passages are proclaimed regularly in worship. Below are examples of both minimal and recognizable changes.

Example of Minimal Changes

Isaiah 62:1-3

1 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

Genesis 1:1-2

1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

1 When God began to create the heavens and the earth,2 the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

Luke 2:6-7

6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place in the guest room.

Romans 8:22-27

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning together as it suffers together the pains of labor, 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

1 Corinthians 13:12-13

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

12 For now we see only a reflection, as in a mirror, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love remain, these three, and the greatest of these is love.
