Beyond the Score: The Musical Mind of Andrew Bruhn

Jun 12, 2025 9:30:00 AM / by Dr. Andrew Bruhn

With so many talented composers in our catalogs, we want to take time to highlight the creativity, process, and passion of those with new music releasing. Each month of 2025 we will feature a composer who has a new piece coming out soon or who has recently published with us in an installment of "Beyond the Score." Today, we are talking with Andrew Bruhn.

What inspired you to begin studying music?

I grew up in a musical family--both my parents are Lutheran church musicians, so music was everywhere. It seemed like a natural fit for me. I started with piano lessons from my mom, sang in the choirs at church, and played in the handbell choirs. That foundation led to being involved in music at school, and eventually, it became central to everything I do!

What motivates you musically today?

I’m motivated by a deep desire to bring beauty into the world and to give voice to emotions, experiences, and people who might only find themselves through music. I can’t imagine a life without music at its center, and I feel incredibly blessed to do this work every day.

What do you draw on for inspiration as you begin a new composition?

Inspiration comes from many places. Sometimes it’s a commission, where I’m responding to a specific need. Other times, it’s writing for my choir—whether out of necessity (I need a two-part accessible setting of Creator of the Stars of Night) or pure creative inspiration (I had an idea and wanted to bring it to life, like Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus).

What is your favorite piece of music and why?

It’s impossible to pick just one—there’s too much great music! But if I had to choose, it would likely be something by Bach, perhaps the B Minor Mass. His music is a perfect synthesis of intellect and emotion, structure and expression. Every time I revisit it, I discover something new.

What draws you to write music for the church, and how do you approach text and music for ensembles that are mostly music-loving amateurs?

Growing up in the church, I feel a deep connection to its rich musical tradition. My goal is to write music that is both accessible and beautiful—meeting church choirs where they are while still providing challenges that inspire growth. I’m not trying to be avant-garde; I want to create music that serves congregations and choirs in a meaningful way.

What is one experience that you have had that wouldn’t have been available if you hadn’t been in the music world?

There are so many moments I could name, but one of the most meaningful is that I met my wife through music—we played together in a brass quintet in college. Music not only shaped my career but also my personal life in profound ways!

What is a favorite hobby or interest outside of music?

Outside of music, I love spending time with my wife, two daughters, and our golden retriever, Ole. I’m an avid reader, especially of biographies, theology, and books on music and teaching. And I’m a big NFL fan—though as a lifelong Chicago Bears supporter, I’ve learned to embrace disappointment!

We are grateful for Andrew's work and the impact it has on the ministry we serve. To learn more about Andrew and his work, check out his releases through Augsburg Fortress here.
