With so many talented composers in our catalogs, we want to take time to highlight the creativity, process, and passion of those with new music releasing. Each month of 2025 we will feature a composer who has a new piece coming out soon or who has recently published with us in an installment of "Beyond the Score." Today, we are talking with Anthony Giamanco.
What inspired you to begin studying music?
My parents had musical backgrounds (my father was a singer, and my mother played the horn in the local symphony orchestra), which fostered an early interest in music for me. They supported my musical pursuits by purchasing an old upright piano when I was about six years old, and I soon started taking lessons.
What motivates you musically today?
My small church choir inspires me with their wonderful sounds. Though many don’t read music, they love singing, and they welcome a challenge. I expect a certain level of musicianship, and they always deliver. Receiving positive feedback from the pastor and congregation when the choir performs pieces that I have composed or arranged is particularly gratifying.
What do you draw on for inspiration as you begin a new composition?
As I embark on a new composition, I often draw inspiration from a variety of sources. An inspiring text sparks creativity. Whether arranging a hymn for choir or instruments, the text is always central. My musical influences include traditional folk music, classical music (spanning from the Middle Ages to the 21st century), jazz, and theatre music. Each has shaped my compositions in different ways.
What is one experience that you have had that wouldn’t have been available if you hadn’t been in the music world?
Several years ago, I had the unique opportunity to perform my original score for “The Libation Bearers,” which is based on an ancient Greek tragedy, with a group of theatre students from the University of Detroit-Mercy. This musical was performed over three days in open-air amphitheatres across Greece, an experience that remains unforgettable.
What is a favorite hobby or interest outside of music?
I enjoy reading (catching up on 19th and 20th century classics), cooking (collecting and trying out interesting recipes), and collecting antiques (vintage sheet music, LPs, books, and architectural pieces).
