We made it to September, y’all…thanks be to God! We are still here, and that means God is still here too.

In a world of political seesaws, I am so grateful for spiritual stability. While I cling to the grace of God’s promise to “do a new thing” when seasons of transition approach, my spirit swells in knowing that I can rest in the consistent and unchanging hand of God.

Sometimes we long for sameness.

Like my Mama’s pot roast, sometimes we hunger for the comfort of the familiar. While flashy newness often feels exciting (at first), the atmosphere it brings with it can cause great turbulence. September - also known as the month of new starts - is famous for its “newness”…new season, new learning spaces, new clothes, new mindset.

While these anticipated shifts feel thrilling for some, they may feel exhausting to others. Adding the “cherry on top” of unforeseen changes - deportations, layoffs, DEI backlash - the fountain of “new” is overflowing.

Flooding, even.

In a world of perpetually shifting ground, the emotional dizziness is real. We cannot protect ourselves from the danger of the incessant wind of injustice when we have no idea which direction it is coming from.

Indeed, the imperial roller coaster of oppression is dangerous and far reaching…but the Divine Seatbelt provides protection. Every single time. As long as we reach for it, there is consistent protection.

There is balm in being able to sleep with both eyes closed. There is peace in knowing - at breakfast - that dinner is taken care of. There is comfort - and safety - in the reliable presence of God.

Predictable presence.

Predictable peace.
